Het klinkt als een open deur, maar bij dit restaurant in een hoekpand van de Albert Cuyp draait alles om het eten. Niet om het wat neerslachtige personeel, of het danig gedateerde Indiase interieur en de placemats met Italiaans impressionistische schilderingen. Onder een stoffige Taj Mahal worden hier de heerlijkste Indiase gerechten geserveerd. Níét Indisch dus, zoals de Balti-boys zelf op de website proclameren!
Begin met de fantastische Chicken Chat-salade van kip en citroen en kies dan een van de tandooris uit de houtskool-kleioven of de Balti-specialiteiten uit het Noordwesten van India en Pakistan. Maar écht aan te raden zijn de verschillende zijdezachte curry’s van kip, lam of garnalen die worden geserveerd met kokos-basmatirijst en versgebakken Indiaas brood.
Als dit allemaal op tafel staat, dan weet je opeens waarom dit ogenschijnlijk zo smaakloze restaurant zo vol zit met een mix van leuke jonge en oude mensen.
 
 

Balti House is one of those restaurants you hear about through the grapevine. In Birmingham you’ll stumble upon Balti Houses everywhere, but this is the only real one in Amsterdam. It’s far and beyond the best Indian of the neighborhood and maybe of all of Amsterdam. ‘Balti’ is not only a geographical indication, but also the generic name of a curry. There are about a 100 varieties on the menu here. Many have meat, but there are also plenty of vegetarian options, all well-seasoned and served with fresh naan and chapatti's. This Indian living room away from home is in an old little building. Wooden floors and wooden tables and a dash of Taj Mahal with tapestries and proportionate use of gold ornaments. Taste is clearly something that is found only in the food here. The waitstaff is kind and helpful, though sometimes it’s difficult to communicate. Many British regulars here, but also groups of creative professionals and residents of De Pijp.
