In het eeuwenoude hart van academisch Leiden, aan de voet van de Pieterkerk, tref je Het Prentenkabinet. In een zeventiende-eeuws pand dat naast prentenkabinet ook dienst deed als kostschool en parochie wordt nu gastheerschap uit de betere regionen geëtaleerd. Het gebouw is een belevenis op zich: loop door de lange gangen met de gewelfde plafonds, en waan je in Eyes Wide Shut. De zalen waar ooit de prenten tentoongesteld werden, vormen nu de achtergrond voor sfeervolle groepsdiners of -lunches. Het interieur is klassiek, met spannende moderne accenten: een knalrode muur in een voor het overige historisch verantwoorde zaal, een moderne interpretatie van een ouderwetse kroonluchter. Als je wilt kun je hier met een klein gezelschap à la carte eten, maar Het Prentenkabinet komt het best tot zijn recht als je een feestelijk diner met een groep wilt hebben ter gelegenheid van een huwelijk of academische prestatie bijvoorbeeld. Het eten is altijd op de Franse keuken gebaseerd, en kun je luxueuzer maken naarmate de gelegenheid die je viert indrukwekkender is. De gerechten volgen elkaar in het goede ritme op en de bediening is eerder charmant dan professioneel en dat draagt bij aan de feestelijke sfeer. En nu dat proefschrift maar afmaken!

Wij sluiten ons helemaal aan bij de omschrijving die spotter Hieronymus geeft. Het Prentenkabinet is klassiek van aard maar zonder enige oubolligheid. Bewonderenswaardig dat de huidige eigenaren het pand zoveel mogelijk in de 'originele staat' hebben opgeknapt. Dat verdient ook een compliment. En de prijsstelling van het gebodene? Dat vonden we zeer acceptabel. Verder is Het Prentenkabinet zeer actief, er worden wijncursussen gegeven en er zijn regelmatig speciale arrangementen. Samen met Woods behoort het toch wel tot het beste restaurants van Leiden!
