Steeds meer Hagenaars voelen zich thuis bij Appeltje Eitje, en terecht. Het voelt alsof je een huiskamer binnen komt lopen, inclusief het leeshoekje met ribfluwelen stoelen van oma. De kleine lampenkapjes hangen scheef aan de frisgroene muur. Het meubilair is duidelijk niet in één keer gekocht: overal staan verschillende stoelen en tafels. Een fijne chaos. De jonge ouders die de altijd vrolijke eigenaresse gedag komen zeggen maken plaats voor ons. Onze tafel is de enige die is overgebleven op deze drukke zaterdagmiddag. Niemand maakt zich hier druk, alles gaat met een glimlach. De kaart is net zo speels als het interieur. Van een falafelburger tot een broodje biefstuk met truffelsaus of zelfs een boterham met pindakaas, sambal en komkommer. ’s Avonds diverse huiskamerhappen zoals stamppot en pasta met garnalen, rucola en citroenroom. En dat alles voor een appel en een ei. Het recept op de muur voor ‘de beste appeltaart in de hele wereld’ nodigt uit: stevige punten huisgemaakte appel- en chocoladetaart met versgeklopte slagroom vullen de laatste gaatjes in onze maag. Ook wij gaan weg met een glimlach.

One egg and a lot of Golden Reneittes. Some butter, flour, sugar and a handful of raisins. It’s the recipe for apple cake, written in an old-fashioned typewriter font, on the wall above the black cast-iron stove at Appeltje Eitje. 
We’re sure that this new neighborhood hangout in the Zeeheldenkwartier is here to stay. The ambiance is typically of The Hague, not particularly trendy (and if so, that’s purely coincidental).
Attached to the counter of the open kitchen are funny wooden tables, reminiscent of college seats. The opposite green wall is paneled with long slats, creating the effect of a fence. As if you were sitting in a garden. The entire place looks fresh and cozy with plants, and the waitstaff is eco-friendly. During the daytime they serve a simple lunch menu with a chicken club sandwich on sourdough, a falafel burger with cilantro relish and a parsnip and pine nut quiche. Or a couscous salad with Mediterranean vegetables and feta (made of goat’s milk). At night they serve dishes like hodgepodge and pasta with shrimp, arugula and lemon cream. In the Summer, you can enjoy BBQ and wood- oven pizzas in the garden. Very simple, very nice and very easy.
